 MY FIRST RECUMBENT

I do not know whether the word "recumbent" means anything to you. It is not a curse, it is fit for good society. First I came across it in the book written by Dr Sándor NAGY concerning bikes, about 1990. I took a liking to it at once, and I hoped that some day I also would  possess one. As  much more experienced sources can be found in the internet, I will say only a few words about recumbent. The word is of Latin origin, it means a position of falling half backwards, as you can see the feasting Roman patricians depicted on ancient vases. After all, it was a matter of mere chance that today's bike does not look like this. In the 1930s of the last century, Mr Francois Faure won every race with his recumbent bike named Velocar. It is no wonder because, regarding the air resistance, the ergonomic construction and the effort, the recumbent has more advantages in comparison with that of today's bicycles. The conservative view and the regulation motivated by the obvious business interests, "how a bicycle should look like", meant the decline of recumbent bikes. However, they rose from the ashes like a phoenix in several countries. Only few people use it in Hungary for the time being, but  it is a matter of time and it will become more and more popular in our country as well.

I constructed bit by bit bicycles for my own use, however, a recumbent bike seemed to be a difficult task. That is why in 2006 I went to Szolnok to attend an international bikers' meeting, where there was also a recumbent bike section. I met some very nice people who constructed machines mainly on their own. I tested every type to be found there, two-wheeled and three-wheeled ones alike.

Thanks to Mr Attila MURLASITS, who is the only recumbent bike distributor in Hungary at present, I could test several factory models. Soon I realized what I wanted. Maybe you can count the Hungarian professional manufacturers on one hand. In the camp, I met three experts who were nice in every respect. The problem deriving from the distance was solved by the trustful words said by one of them. He told me he knows a recumbent bike constructor, living in my vinicity, who is more skilful than himself. This is how I got to the MASTER, who, finally, constructed the machine. And the man, proposing the Master, was right. I have never met such a skilful and fastidious man before who I could also well discuss the matters of the world with. After several reconciliations, the individual manufacturing started. It took three months, and we met weekly or bi-weekly. It was on November 2006 that the bike, which I named K1 model, was ready.
